HostGator
A long running budget host with unmetered bandwidth and a simple setup, showing its age against newer rivals.
HostGator has been a budget hosting staple for years, and the formula is still serviceable: low intro pricing, unmetered bandwidth, a familiar cPanel, free SSL, a free domain for the first year and around the clock support by chat, phone and email. Even the entry Hatchling plan covers a single site cleanly, and the Baby plan lifts the website limit. The weaknesses are the ones that come with age. Performance is average, the dashboard and upsell flow feel dated, and like most budget hosts the renewal rates climb to several times the promotional price after the first term. There is nothing here that newer value leaders do not do faster or cheaper, but for a simple site from a recognized name, it still works.
A dependable budget option, that newer rivals now outrun.

Held against it
Serviceable and familiar, no longer the leader.
HostGator scores steadily across the board without standing out anywhere. It is a reasonable budget pick, but value leaders now deliver more speed and features for similar money.
